Spring Breakers Review
*SPOILER FREE*
Today I had the opportunity to see the newest James Franco flick, Spring Breakers. I have to admit that upon initial shock after walking out of the film, I have thought about it over and over non-stop and I can honestly say that I did truly enjoy the film.
Let’s start out with the film as a whole. I think that Harmony Korine nailed it. Korine is known for filming very real people and very real situations and he does just that. I feel as if he just captured the essence of Spring Break and how dangerous it can be if not handled properly. He shot and edited the film brilliantly. He has little bouts of foreshadowing throughout the film that keep you guessing which is interesting because it forces you to pay attention to every little detail which seems to be outrageously important. Frankly, it’s one of the best directing jobs I’ve seen.
Onto the actors. James Franco as a rapper, ya’ll. If you’ve seen the film, you’ll understand the ‘ya’ll’ reference. Franco never ceases to amaze me. I’ve seen every single one of his films and each and every time it just further proves to me how admirable I find this man. He plays a rapper by the name of Alien, grill, tattoos, sagging pants, and all. In my review of Oz The Great and Powerful I said that Franco was the wizard and guys, I had it wrong. He truly is Alien. He portrays this role in such a believable manner that I can’t get over the fact he doesn’t have cornrows in real life. He absolutely slays it. He made me laugh uncontrollably and shake my head in disbelief. If you are fan of James, this is a must-see.
Rounding out the film are Selena Gomez, Vanessa Hudgens, Ashley Benson, and Rachel Korine. I’m not exactly sure that I know where to being but I’ll begin with Gomez. She’s by far the most well-rounded of the group which should come as no surprise to anyone, but for me, she’s the one that strikes the biggest chord. You feel for this character, you want to wrap this character into a warm blanket and give her some hot cocoa. She’s likable and that’s the best I can do. Korine I feel as if is the quiet one of the group despite the fact that she goes hard. This girl knows how to party. She does a decent job in this film, I’ll give her that. Then there’s Hudgens. You know, I can’t get past the fact that she’s Gabriella from High School Musical. Maybe it’s because I’m from a generation where that was incredibly popular during it’s time or because she will always be that character. Every time she said a bad word I would mutter under my breath, ‘Gabriella, Troy would not want to hear you speaking like that.’ Regardless, Hudgens does a pretty good job of playing the party girl. And she’s believable. Even if she’s Gabriella Montez. Finally, there’s Benson. I’ll admit that I haven’t seen much of her previous work because I don’t watch Pretty Little Liars and the only things I’ve seen that she’s worked in is Days of Our Lives and Bring It On: In It to Win It. And honestly, she did a pretty good job as well. Like Hudgens, she’s believable as well. She and Gabriella, I mean Hudgens, look like they can go really hard at a party, or at least it seems like they can.
Overall, like I said, I enjoyed the film. I think you need to walk into this film with an open-mind. It’s important to understand the director isn’t necessarily very conventional, but his unconventional ways make the film great. It is not a film for the faint of heart just because of the innumerous amount of nudity.
WARNING, READ REVIEWS BEFORE SEEING THE FILM. IT IS NOT A FILM FOR EVERYONE.

Oz the Great and Powerful Review
*SPOILER FREE*
Allow me to begin by saying that I thoroughly enjoyed this film as an avid movie-goer and I’ve already seen it twice in as many days and both times I have found the film to be absolutely charming, aesthetically pleasing, and enchanting.
James Franco plays his role perfectly and you really believe everything that he tries to get across. He is the lovable, goofy, enthralling carnival magician with a grin that stretches for miles. Although a ladies man and quite the con, you grow to love this character and enjoy the journey that he goes on as you glide by his side. I sincerely believe him when he admits that greatness is the thing he so desperately wishes to find. Franco is a wizard, indeed.
The roles of the three witches played by Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, and Michelle Williams are not only enigmatic but highly entertaining. Kunis is incredibly charismatic and not to mention absolutely beautiful and plays her role well. Weisz is the “bitch” to say the least but she plays bad so good, she is vicious and she’s damn good at it. Lastly, Williams is the perfect Glinda; she’s delightful and delicate, and just has the voice to play this role, literally. The way “child” rolls off her tongue, makes me believe that she is Glinda.
Two actors that really shine in their roles are Zach Braff as Finley, the adorable flying monkey, and Joey King, as China Girl. Braff is hilarious to say the least, and outrageously adorable. He delivers some lines that really got the crowd going at my theater. And then there’s King who plays the lovely little girl who brought tears to my eyes a number of times. She’s plays a young and impressionable little girl made of china but her love for the wizard is what really got me. She’s believable and cute.
Overall, I loved the film. I think it’s such a beautiful film with so many rich colors that your eyes consistently scan the screen to soak it all in. I feel as if I really am in Oz most of the time. It’s a movie that is sure to make you laugh and maybe even make you cry, but I guarantee that you will leave the theater insanely happy.
