And somewhere, against all odds, James Franco is buying drinks for everybody. The colossal hosting disaster from last year is now forgotten by the safe, unfunny, retro-disaster that was Crystal making jokes that he laughed at repeatedly and overseeing an Oscars telecast that was as poorly paced as any in recent memory.

Well don’t James Franco and Anne Hathaway look better now? Last year’s Oscar show may have been a headlong collision, but at least a crash has curiosity value. This year’s show was as lively and colorful as cold oatmeal. You know it’s a dull show when even the Best Dead People “In Memoriam” sequence is chilly, unemotional and flat.

And you thought last year’s hosts James Franco and Anne Hathaway made for a dull show! This year’s show was filled with time fillers such as a Cirque du Soleil performance for no real apparent reason other than to celebrate the fact that we all like to watch movies.

Watching Billy Crystal host the Oscars made me do the impossible: Wish James Franco was back. OK, that’s an exaggeration. But the veteran emcee — only Bob Hope has hosted more Oscars — left his A game at home Sunday. At least Crystal’s mediocre monologue was consistent with a mediocre 84th installment of Hollywood’s biggest awards ceremony.

The show was a disaster—the dullest I’ve seen since last year. The duo of James Franco and Anne Hathaway was humorless but, at least, new. This year’s broadcast was cadaverous, a depressing slog through routines that didn’t seem spruced-up but rather brought artificially and monstrously back to life. Yet what redeems the festivities nonetheless, somehow, and surprisingly, is the thing that the Oscars are, after all, about: the cinema itself.
