I doubt anything James Franco chooses to affiliate himself with will ever have much Oscar glory. But that’s because the projects he’s a part of are not mind-numbingly dull conventional films, told with the same archaic narrative arcs, that only really serve to uphold bourgeois ideologies. The stories he does choose to tell are about interesting and remarkable people that maybe lead unorthodox lifestyles and all that leads to is avid discussions on internet celebrity forums about whether it all means he’s gay and/or how pretentious he is. Whilst films that glorify right-wing political figures who have done more harm than good (The Iron Lady!!) or make a king with a stutter seem cuddly and lovable to make sub-intelligent academy voters happy are rewarded with lots of miniature golden statues. I mean why should the average 67 year old, middle class, white, male, straight voter support films that challenge the status-quo or make unsettling comments about the society in which we live when they can celebrate ‘the same old’? There have been so many ridiculous Oscar snubs over the years that I can’t take any of it seriously..
