I will be absent from tumblr these next few days for the holiday…for those celebrating, have a wonderful Thanksgiving and for those who aren’t, have a great rest of the week!
Allow me to begin by saying that witnessing the Divergent trailer on the big screen was truly incredible and from the looks of the people around me, they seemed pretty thrilled about it as well.
When the film began I immediately started to cry. I think a lot of emotions hit me at once and I think it was partially because I, having read the novels, knew what was to come and that in itself made me very emotional and then just the fact that after waiting since March of 2012 we finally have Catching Fire which made me outrageously proud and of course, I was damn excited.
The film itself is stunning. Aesthetically speaking, it’s beautiful. The somber representations of the outlying districts with the full, vivid colors of the wealthier ones and the Capitol were outstanding. The grayness to District 12 was so spot on and then of course the beauty of the arena is incomparable.
Talking about how beautiful the film is, is the easiest thing to talk about, I think.
The acting is, for lack of a better term, absolutely outrageous in the best possible way. Jennifer Lawrence, as always, was amazing. She truly never disappoints in any film that she does, but in this one, she doesn’t just hit the ball out of the park, she knocks it out of the freaking stratosphere. She plays Katniss Everdeen so damn well. Every emotion that runs across her face is important, every word she utters, every touch or move, absolutely everything she does is so detrimental to the role and she does it so, so well. Jennifer is a force to be reckoned with.
Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark deserves all the recognition he should hopefully receive. He’s incredible. He left me speechless. He made me cry over and over and over again. I can’t even describe how good he is. I’ve always loved Josh as an actor, but this time around he’s grown so much and has done so much for this role that my love seriously knows no bounds. He slays it.
And then there’s Liam Hemsworth as Gale Hawthorne. I have to admit that Gale is one of those characters that I’ve always struggled with because I adore Peeta so much, but Liam as Gale? Genius. Brilliant. Liam is astounding as Liam. He gets Gale so masterfully that it’s almost scientific. He’s just so damn good. So damn good. I can never imagine anyone else ever having played this role because it belongs to Liam.
What about the cast around them? Let’s talk about Sam Claflin as one of my favorite male characters of all-time, Finnick Odair. He kills it. I had such a perfect image of Finnick in my head because he’s one of those characters that I’ve loved since the moment we met him in Catching Fire, and Sam plays him beautifully. The moments where Finnick shows his true colors…so beautiful. His snarky attitude and yet utter bravery come across triumphantly. Also, Sam and his trident? I want.
Jena Malone as Johanna Mason is one of the best casting jobs I have ever seen in my entire life. She is badass. The way she wields that axe? Incredible. I loved her interactions with Katniss and the way her friendship with Finnick came across was perfect. You never have the chance to doubt her because she’s so amazing.
As far as Elizabeth Banks, Lenny Kravitz, Donald Sutherland, and Woody Harrelson go, I mean, I have no words. Woody as Haymitch is the best damn thing I have ever seen. I love Haymitch because Woody gets him so damn well. Elizabeth as Effie is brilliant as well and in some of the more touching moments in the film, the way she cares about Katniss and Peeta is beautiful -moved me to tears in fact. Lenny as Cinna kills me because Cinna is another one of those characters that you love instantly and well, his portrayal was perfect as well. Donald is damn creepy as President Snow and I love it. He terrifies me as I think he should.
There are several other people I need to acknowledge as well: Stanley Tucci made me laugh like no other as Caesar Flickerman. I’ve never seen a film and been disappointed in Stanley, but as Caesar he’s a riot. Jeffrey Wright as Beetee was another excellent casting choice. He is Volts. He gets it. The way he carries Beetee’s eerie intelligence is great and of course, his relationship with Wiress, played by Amanda Plummer, who does a wonderful job as well, is so, so endearing. Then that leaves me with Lynn Cohen who plays Mags and she was another that brought tears to my eyes almost instantly. Her adoration for Finnick is so, so lovely and she just made me cry, like a lot. Philip Seymour Hoffman is an excellent, creepy, yet genius Plutarch Heavensbee. Having read the novels, I didn’t even want to like the guy despite the fact that I know his story but he was awesome. The people around me were pretty damn pleased with his role as well. And finally, allow me to acknowledge Willow Shields who is the most adorable and perfect Primrose Everdeen I could have ever imagined. She’s beautiful but you can see her strength in this film and she masters it.
Overall, the film is a cinematic masterpiece. It deals with some very themes such as suffering as entertainment, the division between the wealthy and the poor, rebellion, and more but it’s a film that is drenched with beauty, sophistication, hilarity, devastation, destruction, hope, and fear.
It’s incredible. I highly recommend it to everyone. People who have read the novels will thoroughly enjoy it because I think it is a very faithful book adaptation. And those who haven’t read the novels, will see it because the first one was excellent but this one blows it out of the water.
Day 30: Do You Want There To Be A Movie?
A movie has already been made and frankly, I am quite excited about this. I am so outrageously proud of these novels and I truly hope the film will succeed. I know what has been said about the trailer and the doubts some people have but as fans of the series, we need to be supportive. We have nothing to go on until after we see the film. We can’t pass judgement on a 60 second clip. But for right now, I have faith.
Appropriate that I finished this challenge today, the same day The Fiery Heart ripped mine out. Still crying.
WHY DO THESE BOOKS ALWAYS LEAVE ME FEELING LIKE THIS

Day 29: Would you rather be a Dhampir or Moroi?
Okay, I have totally gone over this topic in my head a million times and I still don’t know! Being a dhampir means being a total badass but being a moroi means you can wield an element and you age gracefully and you get body guards and just…I guess I want to be a moroi. These are the questions that haunt me.
